Viruses and the University Network

Some good discussion and off-topic bantering going on at Slashdot about "Should Colleges Monitor Students' PCs?" The liberal-arts college in question is forcing PC users to download and install software that will allow patches and virus definitions to be pushed onto the computer. A very hands-free solution for the student, but it raises some privacy concerns. I also don't like what I'm hearing about how MAC addresses can be changed.

And since it was a slashdot article, nobody read it. :)

The author claims to be worried about someone breaking in to the central system and having control over all the computers. More likely, he's worried about someone monitoring his pr0n surfing.

Fact 1: The central system will be better protected than almost every student workstation on the network.

Fact 2: Without the central system, the hacker's can and will control a signifigant portion of the machines on his network. There's nothing like being surrounded by viruses and zombies to make you feel nice and secure.

Fact 3: Everyone knows about your pr0n.

Fact 4: No one cares about your pr0n.
