Catch the Creeper on the web!

To tie in with the video debut of JEEPERS CREEPERS II January 23, MGM has posted a “Catch the Creeper” game here. The Pac-Man-style game challenges you as the Creeper to eat up a field of dots and avoid the farmers who are out to get you. It’s part of the overall JEEPERS CREEPERS II video-release official website, which offers a trailer, a list of the DVD’s many special features, a link to the movie’s original theatrical site and more.

Jarn always hates when I make reference to the line "Elf booty got soul" from a Lords of the Rhymes song. For some reason, he can't find the humor in Hobbit rap. Well, I noticed a link on Metafilter with the exact same title. It looks like there is an internet wide conspiracy to piss Jarn off! Warning: NSFW.

In order to stay sane and to prevent the abuse of alcohol during and after work hours, we often get some gaming time during our lunch breaks. While we have been deeply satisfied with our current entertainment, we occasionally talk about picking up a different game. Lo and behold, somebody on Slashdot asked a similar question. The results are interesting, which peaks my interests towards BZFlag and Scorched 3D.

More than 50 percent of all Internet traffic across the world passes through Virginia -- AOL and 1,300 service providers or technology companies are located there. So it figures this is where we find the first felony prosecution for violation of antispam statutes. The spammers could (make that SHOULD) do 20 years.

HelpDesk Anecdote; Working on a HP Proliant DL380 G3 with Win 2003 Ent Ed. The box is in a Cluster as a second node, we noticed it kept failing , blue screening and rebooting. Troubleshooting both e With M$ & HP. At this point to no avail. This morning I cam in the box had blue screened, but it was like a scrolling Blue screen, sorta like when you try to adjust the Vertical and Horizontal setting on the back of an old TV. Writing was a slanted while scrolling kinda like the Star Wars opening plot text. Thought this was pretty funny, putting it up for a vote on a new Term for this occurrence, I will start with BlueScreen of the DeathStar.

Feds get a 'D' in computer security. Anyone else scared that even NASA can't secure their own network? If the rocket scientists can't do it, who can?
Microsoft skips December security updates. Allow me to translate their excuse: It's not that we're not doing anything, it's just that we're not doing anything. Should make for a fun Christmas full of hacked machines...

Steve Jobs talks about the music industry, iTunes Store & iPod sales in RollingStone.com. I'm blogging this for this great quote: 'When we first went to talk to these record companies -- about eighteen months ago -- we said, "None of this technology that you're talking about's gonna work. We have Ph.D.s here who know the stuff cold, and we don't believe it's possible to protect digital content."' Jobs goes on to point out that the record companies kept pushing Apple away until they realized that subscription services won't cut it.

Microsoft, bowing to legal pressure from their Java settlement, will no longer be distributing several products. The big products include Office 2000, IE 5.5, SQL Server 7 and Windows 98 (except SE). Support for these products is expected to remain.
I'm glad most of this stuff is being tossed, save for IE 5.5, which is still used way too much.

Joss Whedon previews the Firefly DVD and has the quote of the day: "And one of the episodes is them defending a whorehouse. And you can never have enough episodes about people defending a whorehouse." I, for one, can't wait for my DVD's to ship.
Well, at least the people who made and starred in Battlestar Galactica like it. That's worth something isn't it? For all you naysayers out there who expect BG to suck, just remember one very important fact: Keanu (aka Lord of the Tools) is NOT in the film. It already better than the second and third Matrix films...

In an attempt to not help customers, Dell has decided it's good business to forbid spyware removal support. Sounds like a good decision to me! Why waste time helping customers when you can fall back to the good old "restore your system from the restore CD?" I wonder if they bother to tell customers they'll lose all their data when they do it... We use Spybot Search and Destroy on a daily basis here and I can't tell you how many times it's saved a computer from a horrible spyware infested death. I officially nominate all of Dell support as the tool of the week. However, since this obviously covers more than one person, I'll steal a phrase from an earlier comment and call them the "Toolbox of the week." Shame on you Dell support. Shame, shame...

I'm going to start something new on this blog: Tool of the day. The first official Tool of the day is Hayden Christensen. He gives away the following spoiler for the upcoming film "Star Wars Episode 3: No One Cares": "'Yes,' Christensen told the newspaper. 'You'll hear the breathing.' He added, 'I might get in trouble just for saying that." No, really? You can't mean that Darth Vader will be in the film. It's only the last movie in the series - why would they bother trying to complete the story? Why don't you go ahead and ruin the rest of the movie by saying "there will be conflict and resolution." Hayden Christensen, you are a Tool.
It's time to pull out the plastic and do some online holiday shopping. Who wouldn't want one of these?

Here's a follow story of the Novell purchase of SuSE -- putting it all in perspective.

The overall reaction I've been seeing is that this purchase and RedHat moving towards server support only shows that Linux can be profitable on just the server level now, with a major play towards the desktop market several years down the road. RedHat's CEO basically came out and said this.

Microsoft's Longhorn release better be spectactular, or else the Linux fires will be fueled.

Hell Froze Over, indeed. The marketing wizards at Apple deserve a raise for that line.
CNet is reporting that "Microsoft released its first monthly security update on Wednesday, following a new schedule that attempts to ease the load on overburdened system administrators." How does waiting until the end of the month to secure systems ease the load? I wonder if virus creators will now time the viruses for the day after the previous month's updates. That would give them a full month to wreak havoc before Microsoft bothers to fix the problem. Note to Bill: delaying security updates does NOT help me!

Microsoft set up a web page to help people figure out if a Microsoft security-related message is genuine. There quite a few words and a couple of pretty pictures, but I can sum the whole thing up in a couple of sentences. Ways to know it's a Microsoft security warning: 1. It's a patch for the patch you rolled out last week. 2. 3 of them were issued at the same time. 3. It addresses the symptoms and not the problem. 4. The security information that prompted the patch to be created was released at least 6 months prior.

Parents Sue School Over Wi-Fi: A pioneering elementary school district outside Chicago has been sued for installing a wireless computer network by parents worried that exposure to the network's radio waves could harm their children. Someone should tell them that cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors run in the same frequency range. I honestly can't believe they are suing over this - I would love for my child to go to a school like this! Here is a fix for those regular users who can no longer get photo editor to work ( For the Is tyrant who likes to lock them out of anything)...

A search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base for your exact error message returns article 260151 titled: "OFF2000: "No File Format Information Can Be Found in the Registry" Message When You Start Photo Editor". In sum the article says:
1. "Microsoft Photo Editor is a minor auxiliary application that does not meet the requirements of the Windows 2000 Logo compliant program"
2. The program is "trying to access registry keys that require permissions that your account does not have"
3. The workaround is to give "Users" Full Control of this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

I've got an idea. Instead of making minor changes to Internet Explorer, why doesn't Microsoft actually update IE so it has a current feature set. Why does every other browser have pop-up blocking and tabbed browsing? Someone explain to me why IE has 97% of the market with 3% of the features!
IBM has developed an airbag for laptop computers! What's next? I wonder if laptops will start coming with LCD wipers to clean off fingerprints...
An article at the Register claims that Linux and Mac OS X would still be more secure than MS Windows even if they were used more frequently. Its a good article for pondering.

One issue I have with the article is the author's claim of a security risk created by Microsoft's monoculture. The author argues that Windows users are exploited because they mainly only use Outlook (which uses the unsecure Internet Explorer), whereas Linux and OS X users have a plethora of apps to use. If we lived in a Mac OS X world, however, there would have to be one killer Outlook-esk OS X app that businesses would flock to -- thus creating a target for virus writers due to popularity. It might be harder to write exploit code for a Linux/OS X app, but it can be done.

Also, the author states that some Linux servers are unsecure by holding MS-type documents (Word .doc's, Excel .xls's). From what information I've seen, macro viruses have gone the way of the dinosaur the last 2-3 years. Word/Excel viruses don't proprogate quickly and efficiently like the viruses/worms of today.

I agree with the author that if we lived in this mythical OS X/Linux world, there would be less viruses floating around. Most of us can agree that Microsoft Windows products are not the most secure in the world. But there's a fine line between comparing the number of flaws between OS's and straight-up Microsoft bashing.

VeriSign implemented this service in order to generate more domain registrations. If VeriSign doesn't shut down the SiteFinder service by Saturday, Oct. 4th, then ICANN may sue to cut VeriSign out of managing the .com and the .net domains. Which would hurt VeriSign's security certificates business.

This is why we tell the stupid users to update Windows AND the virus scanners.

Want to know a way to guarantee that a movie will suck? How about creating a movie based on a book that you didn't read. To make it worse, try not even liking the genre of the film you're making. If you're still not sure it sucks enough, cast Ben Affleck in a leading role. I'm a John Woo fan and this movie is SO going to suck!
It's hard to believe, but there was actually a technology company (other than Microsoft) that SCO hadn't pissed off yet. When they heard about it, they immediately filed suit. Anyone else think this whole thing is being funded by Bill Gates?

You gotta love when hypocrisy rears its ugly head! Remember when Madonna tried to make a statement about file-sharing and got her website hacked for it? Well, it turns out she's been doing some sharing of her own! From The Smoking Gun: And you thought Madonna came up with those kinky ideas all by herself? A new copyright lawsuit alleges that the singer's latest racy video is based entirely on the work of a late French fashion photographer. Details...
SuSE is set release an update of it's already very good Linux OS. In addition to a bunch of other features, it adds support for NTFS!
Can anyone tell me why it would be a good idea to open the Windows source code to Chinese hackers? If anything would convert me to Linux or OSX, this would be it!

Doctor Who is back.
All that is old will be new again.

Chrome Apples? William Gibson would be SO proud.
Yahoo walls out Trillian. The question begs asking: does anyone actually use Yahoo Messenger?

Attack of the CYLONS

For any one Using Trillain Basic as their IM, they have a PATCH E

What do you do when no one cares about your TV show? How 'bout giving it a new name! I've got a better idea - more hot vulcans!
King Trailer To Debut! "New Line Cinema announced that the new trailer for its upcoming third Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King, will hit theaters on Sept. 26, attached to prints of Secondhand Lions. The trailer will then debut online at the official Web site on Sept. 29." Are you telling me we would have to sit through Haley Joel Osment film just to catch the trailer? That's SO not right!
I hate to steal a link from slashdot, but the RIAA is suing grandma for stealing Gangsta Rap songs. Throw your lawsuits in the air! Wave 'em like you just don't care!
It looks like Gov Davis will do just about anything to get your vote. Will you vote for him if he bans spam? He might have an easier time shooting for world peace...
How many times a week do you get this question;

I have received a notice that my email is undeliverable because of a virus, but I did not send the email, WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

May want to put this link up to avoid the question....
MSN will be suspending its chat service, due to their misuse by spammers and child molesters. Evidently the automated control system MS put into place wasn't cutting the cheese, and we all know they won't pay human mods to police a non-moneymaking service.

There's a new RTS game being developed in the Lord of the Rings universe called Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring. It's made by the same people that put out Command and Conquer. I doubt it can replace WC3, but it might be a boatload of fun to play! The Demo version is now available for download.
No Electricity? Use a Wind-Up Phone Charger
I can just see these Jackoffs cranking these things....Should be quite a sight
Nvidia jumps into handheld market. That's great, but will my PDA be able to play Medal of Honor?
Good Morning All,
Just testing out this Blog. Saw UnderWorld This Weekend Despite the review I thought it was pretty good, a little slow in the middle but I think it sets itself up for a nice sequel. Kate Beckinsale in tight leather, and kicking ass VERY NICE. Anyone else catch it, thoughts?

A high-and-mighty crypto-geek criticizes linux-based security software packages, including at least one VPN client, as sayeth by the mighty Slashdot. But check out this interesting quote from zee geek:
What's even worse is that some of the flaws were pointed out nearly two years ago, but despite the hype about open-source products being quicker with security fixes, some of the protocols still haven't been fixed. At least Microsoft eventually tries to fix their stuff, given sufficient public embarrassment and the odd hundred thousand or so computers being taken out by attackers.
As Linux development picks up more, holes like these will be eventually sealed. But two years is a long time for a fix.

Edit: I really like this guy's commentary:
Whenever someone thinks that they can replace SSL/SSH with something much better that they designed this morning over coffee, their computer speakers should generate some sort of penis-shaped sound wave and plunge it repeatedly into their skulls until they achieve enlightenment.
Are you tired this morning? Not able to browse the web at your normal speed? Why not have a cup of Mozilla Coffee? It looks like I'm not the only Mozilla mark out there!
Episode III Wraps. But what George Lucas doesn't understand is that the whole series was "wrapped" when he decided to market plush ewok toys to 3 year olds in Return of the Jedi...

HP/Compaq has added this Where do I find the "Any" key on my keyboard? FAQ. This could be helpful, except that a user stupid enough to not know what "press any key" means will be stupid enough to be unable to find this FAQ.

When I redesign our helpdesk's web site, I might throw this FAQ in there for craps and giggles.

Are you tired of getting the nag screen in WinZip? Your copy of WinRAR expired? Sourceforge comes to the rescue again with 7-Zip. Perfect shell integration and it works with zip and rar files (and many more file types).
I've added links to the sidebar for Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird. The best internet browser and e-mail client hands down. They are both free and full of open-source goodness. Use them once and Internet Explorer and Outlook Express will be a thing of the past! Download and enjoy! If you have other files or sites you think should be listed on the sidebar I'm open to suggestions.

Why can't we just all get along? The makers of Trillian think we can. So do the makers of Gaim. Anyone for any open source chat medium? Someone call Sourceforge!

The Next Big Windows Headache is on its way.

Malicious hackers are starting to circulate computer code that exploits recently found vulnerabilities in some versions of Microsoft's Windows operating system.

I feel like I'm sitting on the beach watching the hurricane blow in. Most of our student user base have probably not patched, despite all their problems with Blaster a month ago.

Microsoft Windows Update: "Recommended Update for Windows Rights Management client 1.0
Download size: 3.6 MB, < 1 minute

The Windows Rights Management (RM) client is required for your computer to run applications that provide functionality based on RM technologies. Installing this client allows RM-aware applications to work with Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) to provide licenses for publishing and consuming RM-protected information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. "

Does this sound like a bad idea to anyone else?
KILL BILL - THE 4TH FILM BY QUENTIN TARANTINO There's a new trailer for Kill Bill. This movie keeps looking better and better! Oh, and the plot should be good too.
OK, Here's the first stupid user comment:
Last week, I got to my desk after lunch, refreshed the helpdesk and got:
"Client is requesting help putting her printer back together." The clients name starts with Claud...
Steve knows who I am talking about. The afternoon went downhill from there...
AOL Time Warner drops AOL from name
