If there's no Kirk, it's not Star Trek.

I disagree with your purist assessment. ST:The Next Generation did an awesome job of capturing the same wonder and adventure of the original series. ST:Deep Space 9 started out lame but then took a very original and new look into the ST universe. Unfortunately, ST:Voyager and ST:Enterprise have both failed to really secure their places as great ST shows.

While DS9 and NG were good Sci-Fi shows, I don't consider them Star Trek. Kirk, Spock, and Bones are what made Trek what it is. I desperately wanted Voyager to be good, but it sucked. Enterprise had promise, but didn't deliver for me.

I think Bakula made a fine captain better than I expected anyway. Show need more T'Pol in skimpy outfits.
Actually i thought the show was finally finding it's wings and will be sad to see it go, teamed with Battlestar made a fine Sci-Fi friday. At least I still have battlestar which is shaping up nicely.
