Slow Window Switching in Word 2007?

I ran into this issue, and it has been driving me insane. I found a solution while researching a completely different problem.

Especially important is the Note to Vista users which was driving me insane when I tried to disable an Add-In. Why Word doesn't invoke UAC I don't know, but the provided solution works like a charm.

The culprit seems to be Word Add-Ins, in particular the Adobe Acrobat add-in that worked fine with pre-2007 versions of Word. The solution is to deactivate or remove this troublesome critter. The good news is that it won't interfere with Acrobat when you run it as a standalone program and you can still save Word files as PDF files using the Office->Save As->PDF or XPS command.
Here are the steps for removing the Acroabt add-in:

1. Click the big round Office button in the upper left corner. You see the New, Open, Save commands and a list of recent documents.
   
2. Down at the bottom of the menu, click the Word Options button. The Word Options window opens. If you've changed any of the settings in Word, you're already familiar with this window and some of these options.
   
3. On the left, click the Add-Ins button to see the list of add-ins installed in your copy of Word.
   
4. Set the drop-down menu at the bottom of the window to "COM Add-ins" and then click the Go button. A dialog box appears, showing add-ins with check marks next to them.
   
5. You can either deselect Add-ins to stop them from running or you can remove them, a more permanent solution. To deselect the Adobe Acrobat add-in, just click to remove the check mark. To remove the add-in, select it then click the Remove button on the right side of the Window.
   
6. Click OK when you're done to close the Add-In dialog box.
   

If you deselect the Acrobat add-in and that doesn't do the trick, try removing it entirely as explained in step 5 above. It's possible that other Add-Ins might cause the same problem, so if you remove the Acrobat add-in and still have troubles, try selectively removing the other add-ins.

Note for Vista Users: If you're using Vista, you may get this cryptic error message: The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed. Helpful, huh? Translation: Word won't let you make this change unless it recognizes you as an administrator. So, you need to start Word as an administrator. Here's the process: Press the Windows button on your keyboard, or click the Start button to open the Start panel. In the "Start Search" box at the bottom, type in "winword.exe". After a little churning, Vista will list the winword.exe file in its list. Right-click on the file and choose "Run as administrator" from the list. Once Word opens, follow the steps described above.

G4 To Air Spaceballs Series

MGM TV has commissioned an animated series based on Mel Brooks' 1987 Spaceballs movie and sold exclusive rights in the U.S. to Comcast's G4 cable network, Variety reported.

Encompassing a one-hour pilot and 13 half-hour episodes, the project represents the first scripted series green-lighted by the new TV division at MGM, led by Jim Packer, president of the worldwide TV distribution group. The series kicks off on G4 in fall 2007, the trade paper reported.

Although the movie grossed only $38.1 million in the United States, the Star Wars satire has become a successful franchise on DVD and in cable and pay TV reruns.

Brooks and Thomas Meehan, who co-wrote the movie with Ronnie Graham, have written the one-hour pilot, and Meehan will supervise the writing of the 13 half-hours. Brooks will do two of the voices, President Skroob and Yogurt. Germany's Berliner Film Companie will provide the animation.

Star Trek Gets Upgraded: " The original 1960s Star Trek series will receive a high-tech makeover and return to broadcast syndication for the first time in 16 years with digitally remastered episodes, Paramount announced." StarTrek.com has more details, and a link to a picture of the updated enterprise. Further proof that in HD, everything is better.

Writely is Ready!

ARS Technica is reporting that Google's Writely is now back open to the public. If you've been waiting (I have), now is your chance to get an account. After a quick review, it seems fairly effective for simple documents - especially if collaboration is required. In fact, I wrote and published this blog post using Writely.

According to SciFi.com, Will Smith is set to ruin another classic science fiction story. This time, it's Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend". Personally, I'm rooting for the vampires.

The Doctor is IN

The Sci-Fi channel has acquired the rights to air season 2 of the new Doctor Who series. Much to my surprise, I rather enjoyed the first season. It's more like a B-movie than the usual end of the (world, universe, humanity - pick one) variety that is so prevalent. I'd encourage everyone to check it out when it's released on September 29th.

It seems like a banner week for James T. Kirk updates. This time, it appears that he will do voice work for an upcoming game that will let you play as commander of more than 60 starships from any of the live-action series. I'd buy this game just to see Kirk show that weenie Picard how a real man beats up on the Borg: double-fisted punches, improvised gunpowder, and stealing of all attractive alien women.

Scifi.com is reporting that Shatner is sponsoring an online contest to find the most talented SF personality in the United States. The grand-prize winner will receive a large cash award and will be named the official spokesperson for the William Shatner Science Fiction DVD Club. Release early, release often

SourceForge is dead, long live Google Code Project Hosting. While Google Code Project Hosting doesn't have quite the same ring to it as SourceForge does, it does have a better slogan: "Release early, release often". I got chills when I read it (those of you who know me personally know how much I love alpha and beta software). In the announcement, Google said they are being careful not to stomp on SourceForge, but it's hard to see that actually playing out.

Kissing the gadget budget goodbye

CNet has a story about how women make up an ever-growing percentage of the gadget market. This is very, very bad news for married men who like their gadgets. It's tough enough to find cash for that new iPod, MacBook, Treo, and HD Tivo... now just imagine buying two of everything. It's almost enough to make a grown geek cry. Beware of spousal gadget envy! I've learned (the hard way of course) that there is no acceptable justification for giving the wife a hand-me-down iPod so you can buy a shiny new Nano.
